![]() Let's Get Digital...Digital!
As 2011 takes us deeper into an age defined by digital media and technology, our industry finds itself perpetually adapting and growing in response to this initiative. The education sector has made it a priority to recognize and garner the efforts of students to further cultivate this movement by creating the appropriate environments and allotting the resources to support them.
In March 2009, Ryerson University president, Sheldon Levy, announced a vision of a “digital hub on Yonge Street: a place where, at any time of day or year, the energy and excitement is palpable as people of all ages buy, learn and work with digital technologies that drive the economy and connect communities.” Three short years later, Mr. Levy and the students at Ryerson University give us The Digital Media Zone (DMZ). The space has enabled students to “explore, collaborate, innovate, design and showcase their digitally based concepts” and Patrick Cassidy is proud to have been apart of such an important endeavor. We had the honor of planning the design and installation of furniture for this 6400 sq foot loft, located at 10 Dundas East. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a panoramic view of Yonge-Dundas Square, we knew that forward, contemporary and inspirational design was the only way to approach this project. PCA partnered with Krueger International to furnish this space. We used sustainable, practical and aesthetically relevant lines. For seating, we chose the uniquely designed ‘Strive’ Chair. Easily stored, nesting and featuring a flex-back, the ‘Strive’ provides comfort, efficiency and continual style. In accordance with the digital era’s theme of conservability and sustainability, the ‘Strive’ was the optimal choice for its use of readily available recyclable and low cost materials for its construction. For tables, PCA recommended KI’s ‘Trek’ Table. In lieu of all things innovative, naturally we chose a line that introduced a fresh perspective on table design. The ‘Trek’s’ angled leg profile is a significant departure from the traditional floor hugging bases. The implementation was a big hit with staff and students alike. With education being one of the first sectors to be transformed by the digital revolution, its comforting to know that there are manufacturers such as KI that can keep up with the demand for new products. PCA looks forward to lending their continued support to any of Ryerson or DMZ’s future projects.
