A New Start for Jackman Humanities
January 23, 2009
Patrick Cassidy and Associates recently joined forces with Kohn Schnier Architects to furnish and design U of T’s Jackman Humanities Building. The Georgian style building is located on the Northwest corner of Bloor and St.George Street. While it used to primarily accommodate medical and dental offices, it is now being used for faculty offices, meeting and administrative space for the Jackman Humanities Institute, the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies, and the department of English, Philosophy and Religion. The 10th floor (the location of the Jackman Humanities Institute), appeared very open, sparse and menacingly white in its beginning stages of construction. It would take a knowledgeable and experienced team to determine just what kind of design and furnishings would be able to comfortably accommodate the staff and faculty. The large interior of the building definitely needed to be anchored through a unifying design, colour and style element that reflected the symmetry, bold decorativeness, and simplicity on its exterior. Our PCA sales team suggested products that met those as well as the style and design requirements of the architects at Kohn Schnier. Additionally, they proposed the implementation of ergonomic furniture and design within the space, which the faculty more than appreciated! PCA was able to compliment the fresh, bold, and sleek designs of the architects with products that would be functional and aesthetically appropriate. The vastness that seemed to resonate within the space of all white walls, now ignites freshness, light, airiness and a touch of decorative style in offices full of furniture from Patrick Cassidy.
