 Subtle Renovations at University College
June 25, 2009
University College is one of the oldest and most revered buildings at U of T due its ability to maintain its historic architectural integrity. A few years ago, there was even a petition by the students protesting the renovation of the wood floors on the east and west wing staircases! This notion of authenticity can be a challenge to a designer when trying to renovate a space. PCA kept this idea in mind when we recently revamped some of the lower level at UC; New work stations and lounge seating at Whitney Hall. Our team knew that along with paint and carpeting choices, the furniture selection would be just as important in brightening up this space. Because the area is used by so many faculty members and students to both lounge and work, the team at PCA came up with products that would be strong enough to withhold the tests of time, but that weren’t aesthetically overbearing or dated. We thought of the Multiflex Chair from Allseating which is, as it name suggests, flexible and malleable for the user sitting. Yet, it’s sturdy enough that the user need two hands to lift it, which is surprising because the chair doesn’t take up much room and looks light as a feather. Fluid provided tables that are versatile in their design and function. The tables are divided by modular perforated metal screens, light in their appearance and reconfigurable with electrical capabilities throughout. The possibilities are endless with these tables and never temporal. Lastly, Keilhauer provided the lounge seating for UC. We liked these chairs mainly because their size was relative to the rest of the room and the other furniture in it – the seating fit right in to the contemporary yet simple look of the rest of the furnishings. While PCA provided these great product solutions to the renovation imitative at Whitney Hall, we really must thank the visionary guidance provided from IBI Architects and Design Group and Jim Linley at UC College, their input was invaluable.
